Super Bowl champion, former Eagles defender dies at 83

Gerry Philbin, a former standout defensive end for the New York Jets, passed away, the team confirmed. He was eighty-three.

During his tenure with the Jets from 1964 to 1972, Philbin had 112 appearances and 109 starts.

On January 12, 1969, he assisted the Jets in defeating the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. Before retiring from the NFL, Gerry Philbin played for the Philadelphia Eagles for one season in addition to his nine seasons with the Jets.

Despite his little physique, Philbin made a significant impact during his NFL career.In 2018, he talked to newyorkjets.com on how, despite weighing 245 pounds and being 6 feet 2 inches tall, he achieved such success.

I was a little handicapped by my size, but I overcome it, so I got the most out of my hard work, he remarked. and then simply achieving the majority of my objectives. Being an All-Star was my goal. Winning the Super Bowl was my goal. as well as the individual objectives of being selected for the All-Time AFL Team. And lastly, being inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor. I really treasure all of those things.

In 1968 and 1969, Philbin was selected to the AFL All-Star team. On the all-time All-AFL team, he was also selected as a defensive end for the first team.

On October 17, 2011, Philbin was honored into the Jets Ring of Honor.

During his tenure with the Jets, Gerry Philbin unofficially collected 64.5 regular season sacks, even though sacks were not kept while he played. He is ranked No. 4 in club history with that number.

According to reports, Philbin stated prior to being inducted into the Jets Ring of Honor, “I had a unique style to rush the passer.” I really enjoyed performing the spin motion on the inside. Since I wasn’t as large as some of the linemen, I believe my quickness helped.

In an interview with newyorkjets.com, John Schmitt, a Jets leader while Philbin was a member of the team, praised his friend.

He was a fantastic teammate, a men’s man, and a decent father. “And he was among our team’s leaders,” Schmitt added.
