The 76ers have acquired Edgecombe, an interesting big guard, to complement All-Star point guard Tyrese Maxey as possible backcourt mainstays. Last season, Edgecombe shot 43.6% from the field and averaged 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.1 steals as a rookie. After starting the 2024–25 season ranked No. 9 in the Associated Press preseason rankings, the Bears ended the season with a 20–15 record and were eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

With seven consecutive guards going off the board after Duke player Cooper Flagg was selected by the Dallas Mavericks at No. 1, the draft aligned well with the Sixers’ quest of a guard.
