Traffic restrictions to be lifted on Route 581 in Cumberland County: PennDOT

Published On:

For a 7.14-mile pavement repair project on Route 581 between Interstate 81 and Interstate 83 in Cumberland County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that, weather allowing, traffic restrictions that have been in place since this spring would be lifted on Sunday night. The repairing of the pavement will continue at night.

Traffic restrictions will be removed from 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 29 until 6 a.m. on Monday, June 30, weather permitting. To return traffic to its initial layout, this entails taking down temporary pavement markings and barriers.

There will be no more shoulder closures at two points on eastbound Route 581 between Sporting Hill Road and Route 11/15. Additionally, the original layout of the right shoulder from northbound Route 15 to eastbound Route 581 will be reinstated.

Just west of I-83, a three-lane stretch of eastbound Route 581 will no longer have a right-lane restriction.

From Sunday through Thursday, concrete pavement patching will continue from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. During construction, drivers should anticipate single-lane closures. Between Exit 3 (Route 11/Carlisle Pike) and the Route 581/I-83 intersection, this construction will continue.

Passengers should drive carefully and attentively through the work zone.

This work is a component of a larger project that includes diamond grinding, concrete patching, replacing two traffic counter device locations, and other various construction tasks along Route 581 in the boroughs of Camp Hill and Lemoyne, as well as East Pennsboro, Hampden, and Lower Allen townships. Between Interstates 81 and 83, this work will be done at night. Both directions of Route 581 will have lane limits at night.

The contractor for this over $15.5 million project is York, Pennsylvania-based Kinsley Construction, LLC.

It is anticipated that all work will be finished by September 8, 2027.
