Officials suspect shark bit woman near N.Y. beach

WANTAGH, N.Y. (AP) State officials say a 20-year-old woman was probably attacked by a young shark at a suburban New York beach when she was waist-deep in the waves.

The unnamed woman was bitten Wednesday at Jones Beach State Park on Long Island, sustaining small injuries to her left leg and foot. State parks officials said in a release that she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

A following drone search for potentially harmful marine species was unsuccessful, and the woman was unable to see what bit her. However, according to state officials, specialists who examined pictures of the injuries and other information think the bites were most likely caused by a juvenile sand tiger shark.

Following the incident, swimming was immediately suspended. Drones and lifeguards checked the water, and swimming was allowed to resume Thursday morning.
