Kansas’s PHILLIPSBURG (AP) According to authorities, a Kansas sheriff’s deputy who was responding to a report regarding fireworks was shot and murdered by a man who was subsequently slain by the wounded cop.

About an hour after the shooting on Friday night in Philadelphia, Phillips County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Brandon Gaede, 30, was declared dead at a hospital, according to the sheriff’s office. Situated close to the state’s border with Nebraska, the city is home to roughly 2,000 people.

Gaede contacted Kolton Griffith, a resident of the house thought to be in charge of the fireworks, while he was responding to a call of illegal, non-consumer-grade pyrotechnics being exploded at a city residence, according to the sheriff’s office.

According to the sheriff’s office, a struggle broke out as Gaede attempted to handcuff Griffith after establishing probable cause to arrest him. Griffith then produced a concealed weapon and shot Gaede.

According to the sheriff’s office, Gaede returned fire after being injured by gunfire, striking Griffith many times. At the scene, Griffith passed away.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office will look into the shooting.
