Crews on the scene of an electrical fire at central Pa. substation

Fire crews are working to put out a fire in Adams County after a MetEd substation caught fire.

Facebook post from the Bendersville Community Fire Department

warned those in the area to avoid Gardners Station Road.

The fire broke out around 8:50 p.m. on the 600 block of Gardners Station Road in Tyrone Township, about 20 minutes after the first emergency transformer was set to arrive in the county.

MetEd told PennLive that it planned to

install at least one of those mobile transformers

being sent to another location, Littlestown, to help reduce the number of power outages.

Photos in the fire department’s post show black smoke clouds in the air and a raging fire behind the gate of the substation.

A number of people commenting under the post said they were without power.

Bendersville Community Fire Department said units are on the scene of the fire and told PennLive they had “no information” about the situation.

Fire police had multiple roadways around the substation shut down as of 11 p.m., according to

the Evening Sun.

The borough has a cooling station set up at 43 S. Columbus Ave., Littlestown. This location will be open until power is restored.

Residents affected can also collect two 10-pound bags of ice and two 1-gallon water jugs at no cost from any of these Giant grocery stores:
