The
Pittsburgh Steelers
are not done adding to their roster despite a slew of moves, Mark Kaboly of the Pat McAfee Show says.
Kaboly says the Steelers could easily look at safety as the next place to add after trading
Minkah Fitzpatrick
. Juan Thornhill stands as one of only two true free safeties on the roster, with the other being Quindell Johnson, who was signed near the end of the spring program.
“I would think that that’s No. 1 on the list,” Kaboly
said
. “I’m not saying I’m not a Juan Thornhill believer, but they based their whole organization on having competition and where’s the competition at for a guy that nobody wanted last year who had a bad season for the Cleveland Browns?”
Right now, if Thornhill got injured, it would either be DeShon Elliott moving back to free safety, or someone like Miles Killebrew patrolling the middle of the field. Given that they are both box safeties, that is not ideal.
“What if somebody gets hurt? You going with Miles Killebrew? I mean what do you have behind that?” Kaboly said. “I think that’s all set up as a veteran guy that they would like to get, but that could be done in September when there might be somebody come free as well. That’s why I think there’s something else on the agenda.”
Thornhill was released by the Cleveland Browns this offseason and played through multiple injuries that he believes affected his level of play. He flew around the football during the first two days in a new defense despite being away from the team for OTAs.
However, spring practice is no indication of how Thornhill will perform throughout the year, and the Steelers need some insurance to fall back on if his play continues to falter or an injury strikes.
