A 35-year-old man has been identified as the victim of a weekend
homicide at a Mechanicsburg home
, the coroner’s office said.
Mechanicsburg resident Zachary Gula died from a gunshot wound to the chest Sunday afternoon at Richard King Jr.’s house on the 400 block of East Marble Street, Coroner Charley Hall said.
Gula’s death was ruled a homicide. King, 35, was arrested the same day and
charged with homicide
.
In charging documents, Mechanicsburg police said a witness called 911 after seeing a man who appeared to be dead lying facedown in the grass outside King’s house.
Police arrived at about 2:23 p.m. and found King sitting in the grass beside Gula’s body, the affidavit said. The Cumberland County Coroner’s Office found blood pooled on Gula’s shirt near his right collarbone.
King told police he’d shot the man with a handgun, court documents said.
Police said they found a blood trail in King’s home leading from the living room to the front porch, then into the yard to where the victim’s body was. A Glock handgun was found in King’s bedroom, with a still-loaded magazine and spent casing, according to the affidavit.
During an interview, police said King told them he shot Gula when Gula attacked him. King said he was not hurt, and there were no obvious injuries on his body, the affidavit said.
Online court records
show King was arraigned Monday morning and denied bail because of the severity of the homicide charge. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 23.
The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office is investigating the case in place of the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office because King is a
lawyer who worked as a clerk
for President Judge Albert Masland.
