A beloved high school teacher in Columbus, Ohio, was found dead earlier this week and her boyfriend has been charged with killing her.
Rachel Prince, 46, an art teacher at Marion-Franklin High School. was found dead on Sunday.
According to
the Columbus Dispatch,
police responded to an complaint on the afternoon of July 13 at a residence on the city’s Northwest Side. Once there they found Prince unresponsive and she was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.
The next day the Franklin County Coroner’s office ruled Prince’s death a homicide, saying that she died of strangulation and blunt force trauma to the head.
Her boyfriend, Jason Palmer, 37, was arrested on July 15 and has been charged with murder.
Witnesses said in a criminal complaint that on the evening of July 12 they saw Prince lying on the concrete outside the couple’s apartment with Palmer on top of her. He later picked her up and carried her into the apartment. Investigators said she left for work the next morning.
In November 2023 and September 2024, Palmer had been arrested for assaulting Price. He was ordered in the latter case to to serve 194 days in jail, but received credit for time already served, the Dispatch reported.
“Ms. Prince devoted her life to uplifting young people, always leading with compassion,” Marion-Franklin High School Principal Tanita Fleming said
in a letter
addressed to families and staff. “Her presence brought hope and guidance to countless lives, and her loss is deeply felt throughout the Marion-Franklin community and beyond. Yet, the legacy she leaves will live on, inspiring us all to believe in the power of one person to make a lasting difference.”
“She was a great woman, a great teacher, a great friend,” Careem Elkins, one of Prince’s former students,
said to WBNS.
“To some of us, she was more like a parent, a best friend.”
