Eleven people were injured on Tuesday after a stampede broke out on an escalator after a Beyonce concert at an Atlanta transit station.
The incident occurred at Vine City Station as concertgoers were coming back from Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter Tour show at Mercedes-Benz Stadium,
One person suffered a broken ankle. Seven others were taken to a hospital for cuts and scrapes. At least one person declined hospital transport. Two other people requested medical assistance after reaching their destinations,
Billboard reported.
Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) police said that they heard someone scream and that witnesses reported that the person who screamed was reacting to seeing an insect.
A
video shared to TikTok
shows a throng of people, some in cowboy hats, bottlenecked around the exit of the escalator. Some of them appeared to have fallen on top of one another.
“After the Beyonce concert last night, the escalator flew down and we all flew down and piled on top of each other … I managed to break free but I was very shaken up,” the caption to the video reads.
“I believe there’s also video on TikTok of a woman claiming it was a 10-year-old relative who screamed when she saw a bug,” Stephany Fisher, MARTA’s Senior Director of Communications,
said to NBC News.
“Video from the rail station clearly shows people reacting and running, but you can’t see who screamed or what they were reacting to.”
Fisher said that the escalator has since been barricaded and that the incident is under investigation by MARTA officials and the escalator’s manufacturer.
