It’s been 20 years since
System of a Down
released a new, full-length album.
Not that
guitarist Daron Malakian
isn’t down to record another one in the future. But he does have some reservations.
Metal Injection reports
how Malakian addressed the lack of new System of the Down material — the last being their fourth studio album two-parter ““Mesmerize (2005)” and “Hypnotize (2005)” — during a recent interview on “
Chris Jericho’s Talk is Jericho
” podcast. Basically, he’d be open to making a new album “if it provides a fresh start.”
“Well, we could do it, and it might even be good, I don’t know,” he said. “But if you listen to even those five that we have, if you listen to the first album to ‘Toxicity,’ there is a difference between them.
“There was an evolution happening. And if I have to say one thing that the hiatus was something that … I wasn’t always down with the hiatus, but whatever — it is what it is. every band has a different story. There was a time I was a little bit more pissed off about it. Now I kind of am, like, it is what it is.”
“I think part of is we left off on a peak,” Malakian continued. “We’ve had ‘Are they gonna ever play? Are they not gonna play?’ And it’s all this kind of thing that happens.
“And then when we do play, people feel like, ‘Oh, this might be the last time they’re gonna play. And none of that has been done on purpose. That’s just the natural way things have gone. I also think it’s the songs.”
According
to MusicRadar
, Malakian has continued to fill the gaping whole in System of a Down fans’ hearts with Scars on Broadway, which he formed in 2008 following System of a Down’s hiatus. The group’s third album “Addicted To The Violence” will drop on Friday, July 18.
Plus, while System of a Down might not be recording anything new, they are currently on tour:
Their next stop
will be MetLife stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, toward the end of August.
