Jalen Ramsey’s role revealed at Pittsburgh Steelers training camp

LATROBE, PA. –Cornerback for the Pittsburgh SteelersWith the Steelers, Jalen Ramsey has found a role that seems to be as a versatile defensive back.

Ramsey stated yesterday that he was open to playing outside cornerback, nickel cornerback, and safety, and he did so on Thursday.

“All I want to do is play football.” Where I am doesn’t matter to me. Corner: Security. Slot. However, Ramsey stated, “I don’t think I’m getting paid what I’m getting paid not to be in a position to affect the game.”

Ramsey began as a safety in the Steelers base package during the first team period. He played in the slot when the team added a fifth defensive back to go into their nickel package. Later on, he would move outside and even accompany players around the field.

The Steelers appear to want to use Ramsey in that manner. Head coach Mike Tomlin stated on Wednesday that Ramsey would be a playmaker for the club that could play anywhere on the field, but he would not affirm that his position will be that versatile throughout the season and advised waiting for events to unfold.

We can play man-to-man against anybody when we have players like Jalen Ramsey, [Darius] Slay, and JPJ [Joey Porter Jr.].Our ability to match up and play man-to-man against anybody in this game is what excites us. Tomlin stated, “I believe it will only reinforce our schematics, the supplemental items, the zone pressures, the bogus pressure, and things of that kind.”

Ramsey is now 31 years old, but based on Thursday, it looks like the Steelers will use him as a chess piece who can play outside cornerback, safety, and slot cornerback as needed.

The Steelers will be able to use Joey Porter Jr., Darius Slay, and Ramsey all on the field at once thanks to their versatility, something they were unable to do in the past.
