Former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman surprisingly retires

The Washington Commanders have announced the retirement of former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Nate Herbig. He agreed to a one-year contract with the team, but rather than continuing, he is hanging up his boots.

Herbig will now focus on his post-playing career after missing the entire previous season due to a ruptured rotator cuff. Nate, the brother of Steelers outside linebacker Nick Herbig, joined the team from the New York Jets and played for them for two seasons.

Before suffering that shoulder injury, he was vying with youngster Zach Frazier to be the starting center for the Steelers. He spent his career playing guard and center.

In the 2019 NFL Draft, Herbig was an undrafted free agent from Stanford who signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he played depth guard from 2019 to 2021. After that, he would move to New York, where he would play for the Jets for just one season before signing a contract with the Steelers.

Herbig participated in 61 games overall during his career, including 30 starts for those three organizations. Despite losing his starting position to Frazier, he was the Steelers’ best inside swingman in 2023 and would remain such.
