According to Donald Trump, all female athletes participating in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles may be required to undergo a one-time sex test.
This follows controversies surrounding Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting and Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, both of whom won gold medals in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. They had already been disqualified from the 2023 Women’s World Championships in New Delhi by the International Boxing Association (IBA) for allegedly failing gender eligibility checks. According to the IBA, a unique test revealed them advantages over other female rivals.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC), however, let them to compete in Paris on the grounds that the age and gender of competitors are determined by their passports.
President Trump pledged extremely rigorous testing before to the Olympics at a news conference, but he did not provide specifics. In addition, he declared that he would head a White House task team to supervise certain aspects of the Games.
All female competitors must take a one-time DNA test prior to competing at the World Championships in Tokyo next month, according to World Athletics. The tests look for the SRY gene, which aids in determining biological sex, and can be performed using a blood sample or a cheek swab.
The tests must be finished by athletes such as Georgia Hunter Bell and Keely Hodgkinson of Team GB prior to the competition starting on September 13.
