New contender emerges for Pittsburgh Steelers in slot cornerback competition

Published On:

PittsburghThe race for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ cornerback spot could be decided by the last second. Earlier this week, defensive coordinator Teryl Austin stated that although Jalen Ramsey would be primarily responsible for starting, the backup will still be determined.

However, Brandin Echols has become a new player in that competition. In Latrobe, Echols played in the slot on Monday and Tuesday. On Thursday, he told reporters that he was still playing there with the first team defense against Beanie Bishop.

Regarding the slot cornerback room, Austin stated, “I think that’s a place where that competition is going to go all the way down to the wire, and we’ll see how it shakes out at the end.”

Earlier this week, Tomlin acknowledged that Echols has begun to lean toward slot cornerback and outside cornerback because the Steelers are attempting to maximize their resources in the cornerback area.

That’s his resume, you know. He has most recently played both indoors and outdoors with the Jets. He is versatile, and it is our responsibility to choose how best to use people, especially when they are flexible, Tomlin stated.

Echols, meanwhile, has played indoors before. He prepared to play in the nickel as well, but he feels more at ease on the outside. He did this with the Jets as injuries mounted.

According to Echols, communication and leverage alter as you move inside, but he feels comfortable in his role.

“I’m just able to demonstrate my versatility,” Echols stated. I want to demonstrate my abilities to them. This situation is really simple. Getting used to the slot machine is quite simple.

Joey Porter Jr. has been limited, according to Echols, which has allowed him to play in the slot. He stated that the team performed poorly and that he hoped they might improve for their game against the Buccaneers on Saturday.

But aside from special teams, Echols has established himself as a roster lock at every position he plays. That might also include the slot cornerback position.
