Ben Griffin, a PGA Tour standout and one of the top 20 players in the world right now, had a rough start to the BMW Championship final round this past weekend. It turns out that Griffin’s difficulties have a valid cause.
After his final round, the 29-year-old revealed that he had taken too much creatine just before teeing off, which caused him to start triple-bogey, double-bogey, bogey.
Creatine is “a natural source of energy that helps your skeletal muscles flex (contract),” according to the Cleveland Clinic. It assists in providing your muscles with a constant flow of energy so they can continue to function, particularly during exercise.
On Sunday, Griffin learned that it’s important to exercise caution when taking too much at once.
“It’s quite an intriguing tale,” Ben Griffin remarked. I therefore supplement with creatine. Additionally, I didn’t take it this morning until I essentially fell asleep at one. And I was the last person in my batch. And I essentially had a snowball of creatine.
I swallowed one of the large boulders that was sort of in my water bottle when I started taking it for the second time. Because I didn’t drink any water afterward, I believe I may have overdosed on creatine, even though I’ve never done so before. I essentially took a snowball-like breath.
Griffin found it difficult to strike the ball straight or putt after consuming too much creatine.
Prior to receiving a 6 on hole No. 2, which is also a par 4, he opened with a 7 on a par 4. After bogeying the par 3 on No. 3, he settled in and played excellent golf for the remainder of the round.
I became somewhat unsteady as a result. Griffin added, “And I’ve never felt like this before.” On the second, I hit it so far out of bounds because I was panicking and didn’t know what to do after four-putting on the first.
Fortunately, my caddie intervened and forced me to drink a full glass of water in an attempt to help me relax. I hit the other one in play after that. After that, I was alright.
After the first three holes, Griffin was better than fine; he finished below par after shooting 7-under on the last 15 holes. He tied for 12th place with a final tournament score of -3.
A somewhat bizarre tale. I don’t anticipate consuming excessive amounts of creatine in the future. Griffin stated, “I will take it, but not in the amount that I probably did on the golf course, which wasn’t probably a healthy amount.”
It isn’t exactly an excuse. I did make poor shots. However, I was physically trembling in a way I had never experienced before. It was a fairly strange situation, and I don’t usually miss many short putts, but I’m proud of the way I sort of recovered.
Griffin’s impressive finish earned him a spot in this weekend’s TOUR Championship. In addition, he is still vying for a berth on the US Ryder Cup squad.
He expressed his excitement in attending the TOUR Championship. Regretfully, I believe I missed out on one of those six Ryder Cup spots, which is a locked slot. I essentially shot 8-under on the final 15 because I knew that was what I needed to do. You need to improve on those initial few, but you’ve learned your lesson. Next week, I’ll be alright.
