Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback for the Pittsburgh SteelersIf Beanie Bishop does do well against the Carolina Panthers, he might be on the outside looking in for a roster place.
As the starting slot cornerback, Bishop initiated the process, but things changed when Jalen Ramsey entered the game. Bishop was replaced as the backup slot cornerback by Brandin Echols last week.
What must the West Virginia product do in his second season to earn a spot on the roster? Splash plays must be used, according to defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, if Bishop wants to make the squad.
Now that you put No. 5 (Jalen Ramsey) and then No. 1 (Brandin Echols) in there, he’s actually up against some pretty excellent competition at the nickel, Austin said. He needs to put in a lot of effort and battle to get noticed in order to establish himself.
During his debut NFL season as an undrafted free agent, Bishop was the starting slot cornerback and recorded three interceptions. He contributed significantly to the team, and he must make the same impression again if he hopes to be included.
“He’s been working really hard,” Austin continued. The main thing that needs to happen to you when you’re not a starter, in my opinion, is that all of these preseason games are important because they give you a chance to separate yourself from other players. Every day we see you in practice. We are aware of your practice routine, but how do you set yourself apart during a game? On game day, do you actually show up? These preseason games will be crucial for Beanie because he has one more chance to impress us, and I have no doubt that he will give it his best.
Bishop had to earn his way up to West Virginia as a low-rated recruit from Louisville. Bishop’s determination to never forget his history was only bolstered by his status as an undrafted free agent.
Bishop stated, “I’m constantly hungry to keep proving myself because I’ve always been doubted.”
Bishop also had a somewhat altered appearance. He was his former self, but leaner and more explosive. In order to re-work his physique, he worked with the Steelers strength and conditioning department in Pittsburgh for the whole offseason. In order to lose the weight, he also made dietary changes.

Bishop is now vying for a roster berth while others around him perform well. The team’s performance in Charlotte will be a major factor in his landing there if he is awarded it.
