After his girlfriend boldly assumed what he was willing to pay for out of love, a man has turned to internet critics for guidance.
On Monday, August 18, the man shared his predicament on the Reddit spopularAm I The A? forum.
The original poster (OP) said that he and his girlfriend had booked a casual dinner at a nice restaurant. However, when he got there, he discovered not just his fiancée but also her brother, parents, and even a cousin.
When the $400 check arrived, OP’s girlfriend allegedly expected him to pay the full amount, even though he didn’t mention talking to her about the surprise beforehand.
OP stated, “She looks at me expecting me to cover it all.” I informed her that while I would be pleased to cover our meals, I would not agree to sponsor her family’s night out.
According to reports, the girlfriend got irritated and told the OP that a true man wouldn’t have thought twice. OP also said that because he refused to cover the cost of the entire group, her mother called him cheap.
In the end, the poster refused to compromise and just covered his and his girlfriend’s meals, leaving her to divide the remaining expenses with her family.
The girlfriend was obviously upset and said that the OP had made her feel ashamed. The man clarified that the idea that he would cover the cost of unexpected guests on what was supposed to be a private dinner date caught him off guard and annoyed him.
The majority of Reddit commenters took the OP’s side and labeled him NTA, or Not The A. OP claimed that he perceived the matter as one of respect rather than money when a fellow Redditor branded his girlfriend unpleasant and entitled.
He stated, “I’m always willing to spoil my partner, but it felt more like pushing boundaries than anything else to be blindsided in front of her entire family and then told a real man should just pay.” I don’t want to be in a relationship where being generous is expected of you or taken for granted.
