Police believe mom lied about baby’s kidnapping, charge parents

CABAZON, Calif. (AP) — Southern California authorities reported Friday that they had arrested the parents of a 7-month-old kid who had gone missing as part of a murder investigation.

Sheriff’s officials stated they think Emmanuel is dead, despite the mother’s accusation last week that her son was abducted.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department announced in a statement that investigators concluded there was no kidnapping in Yucaipa based on the facts. His remains are still being sought after.

According to the agency, Jake Haro, 32, and Rebecca Haro, 41, were taken into custody at their residence in Cabazon, a desert village located roughly 20 miles from Palm Springs.

The arrests occurred just over a week after Rebecca Haro told police that she was attacked while changing her son’s diaper outside a store in the Yucaipa neighborhood of San Bernardino and left unconscious. According to authorities, Haro informed them that her son was gone when she woke up.

According to the sheriff’s department, Haro refused to continue cooperating after being confronted by officials over discrepancies in her account.

According to the agency, Jake Haro sought a lawyer after authorities searched the family’s house.

According to the agency, the couple was arrested and is being held without bond at a Riverside County jail.

The case is being reviewed, according to the Riverside County district attorney’s office, where Cabazon is located.

Immediately, it was unclear if Rebecca Haro had legal representation.

Vincent Hughes, the defense lawyer, did not immediately return a message. Hughes, who is the attorney for Jake Haro in a different case, told The Sun that he didn’t think the parents were to blame for the boy’s disappearance.

Jake Haro told KTLA last week, “Whoever took my son, please return him. We just want him back.”
