LATROBE, PA. –Both players missed a few reps on Thursday, suggesting that the relationship between Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf was ambivalent.
But on Friday, that was completely different. The Steelers offense prevailed 4-3 in the seven-shot period, which involves the team taking seven offensive snaps against the defense on the goal line. Metcalf and Rodgers showed their first affinity for each other.
Metcalf grabbed a stunning pass from Rodgers on his near shoulder and ran a clean out route against CB Darius Slay.
Joey Porter Jr.’s superb coverage subsequently prevented the pair from connecting on a back shoulder throw, but the connection was still there.
Head coach Mike Tomlin dismissed questions about the touchdown because he had seen it coming.
That’s what I expect. I’m not going to a pep rally, you know. I anticipate that. Tomlin smiled and remarked, “That’s what I imagined all summer.”
Tomlin seems unaffected by the ups and downs of training camp, but it must be heartening to watch his two new offensive stars produce those plays. Although it’s not quite complete yet, Metcalf and Rodgers’ relationship is developing just how they had intended.
