Big Spring defeated Shippensburg 23–20 on Friday thanks to a spectacular performance by Ayden Martinez, who caught a 48-yard pass from Chase Fry and made a heads-up lateral to Justin Hawbaker, who went 18 yards to the end zone with no time left.
With 45 seconds left, Braiden Carroll’s 23-yard touchdown run placed Ship ahead 20–14.
Throughout the game, Fry only completed three passes (3-for-7, 102 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT), but he kept his best for last. With forty-five seconds remaining, he reached the BS 44 with a 22-yard pass to Ashton Peffer.
A timeout was followed by the arrival of the Bulldogs’ heroes. Martinez came down with it after Fry threw to the right side into traffic. Martinez gave the ball to Hawbaker, who carried it the distance, while he was being tackled (2 catches, 80 yards).
Shippensburg took the lead early on a 60-yard score run by Mike Severe (8 rushes, 87 yards).
Grady Hope’s runs from 24 and 14 yards (25 carries, 218 yards) helped Big Spring rally with a 14-point second quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, Shippensburg’s Mark Carothers Jr. (18 for 118 yards, 1 TD) scored a touchdown.
At the buzzer, Big Spring wins, whoa. For the victory, Fry locates Ayden Martinez, who laterals it to Justin Hawbaker.23–20 Big Spring final.tweet.com/RjpQYRzUDP
