Browns rookie QB expected to start vs. Eagles in preseason game

The city of PhiladelphiaIn their preseason game against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, the Philadelphia Eagles will take on a starting rookie quarterback. It won’t be Shedeur Sanders, though.

Cleveland stated on Saturday morning that Dillon Gabriel, a third-round rookie out of Oregon, will likely start for the team at Lincoln Financial Field.

There is some ambiguity around which signal-callers the Eagles will face in their second preseason game because of the Browns’ numerous quarterback injuries.

Due to rest, Joe Flacco, the likely Week One starter, is not anticipated to play. In the meanwhile, Kenny Pickett and Sanders will probably be sidelined by injury.

Prior to Wednesday’s joint practice, Colorado native Sanders, a fifth-round rookie, strained his oblique during warm-ups. Pickett, the Eagles’ backup in Super Bowl LIX and a former first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is battling a persistent hamstring ailment.

Gabriel was recovering from a hamstring injury as well. However, he practiced enough to be ready for Saturday, according to the 2024 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year.

It is anticipated that the Browns will only have two quarterbacks available: Gabriel and Tyler Huntley, who was signed earlier this month. For Sydney Brown, Drew Mukuba, Adoree Jackson, Kelee Ringo, and the rest of Philadelphia’s secondary, it will be an intriguing test.
