Before being chosen by the Cleveland Browns with the No. 144 overall choice in the 2025 NFL Draft, former Colorado standout quarterback Shedeur Sanders fell to the fifth round.
Sanders would have remained on the board after that if Jimmy Haslam, the owner of the Browns, had gotten his way.
Haslam told reporters on Tuesday that he did not choose to draft Shedeur Sanders and that he did not anticipate Cleveland doing so.
I would have said, “That’s not happening,” Haslam recalls, “if you had told me that on Friday night while we were driving home, Y all were going to pick Shedeur.”
Apparently, Haslam would have been mistaken.
After discussing the option with the Browns, Cleveland General Manager Andrew Berry finally decided to choose Shedeur Sanders.
Haslam has faith in the individuals he has in place in the Browns front office to make the correct decisions, even if it is not a move he had intended to make. If selecting Shedeur Sanders was the right move, only time will tell.
We spoke early that [Saturday] morning, and we spoke again later that day,” Haslam recalled. I believe the persons we spoke with were the proper ones.
Ultimately, that is Andrew Berry’s decision. Like who will start or what play we’ll call is [Kevin Stefanski’s] call, Andrew made the decision to select Shedeur. Andrew should make that call. He called.
There is no disputing the quarterback’s resume, even though Jimmy Haslam may have been reluctant to select Sanders.
Prior to dropping to the third day, Sanders was predicted to be selected in the first round of the April draft.
Shedeur Sanders, the son of Deion Sanders, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, began playing under Deion at Jackson State before moving to Colorado.
He received the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award in 2024 and contributed to the Buffaloes program’s turnaround. In addition, Shedeur was voted the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and a second-team All-American the previous season.
