Following his terrifying medical emergency during a gig last weekend in Pennsylvania, country music legend Ronnie McDowell is sharing more positive news.
Just four songs into his performance at the Summer Solstice Music Festival in Oley, Pennsylvania, the 75-year-old started slurring his words. He was swiftly removed from the stage and taken to a hospital, where he stayed until Monday, when he was allowed to leave.
Ronnie McDowell Jr., his son, accompanied him to the performance and has subsequently provided an update on his father after he was discharged from the hospital.
My dad posted on Facebook that he was feeling much better today. They are getting all of his medical records from Reading Hospital after he saw a doctor yesterday. His procedure is about to be scheduled. He was still exhibiting mild stroke symptoms as of yesterday, but according to his nurse, everything was perfectly okay. There is no long-term harm, but it might go in a day or a few months (thank you, Jesus).
In a recent post, McDowell Jr. stated that his father would eventually require surgery, and he reiterated that he would keep everyone informed. McDowell Jr. also expressed gratitude to the fans for their support and to everyone who assisted in taking care of his father.
More information regarding the events at the play that resulted in his father being hurried off stage and to the hospital was previously given by McDowell Jr.
He posted on Facebook that he did had a mini-stroke while performing here in Pennsylvania. With his singing in my in-ear monitor, I could hear him slurring his words and losing the words to songs he had sang for years, so I knew something wasn’t right. After a few minutes, I asked my dad how he was feeling and asked him to leave the stage while Steve performed a solo. My powerful dad doesn’t talk like that, and he told me that he wasn’t okay. “I think I may be having a stroke,” he remarked.
McDowell Jr. claimed that he urged the promoter to call the EMT over right away and took his father to a van to cool off.
“They took me to the hospital in Reading,” he stated. I’ll just say that everyone at the hospital was really kind and accommodating. He will require surgery in the coming weeks, the doctors informed him. Although they advise him to rest, they also stated that he can work out and perform in the coming days.
According to McDowell Jr., after his father was discharged from the hospital, he wanted to visit his favorite Italian restaurant.
“I am incredibly grateful to all of my friends and amazing family, as well as my Dad’s Band and The Twang Gang, who were present during the episode,” he stated.
He continued, “Thank you, Jesus, for saving my dad.” You’re great.
More than 30 of McDowell’s songs have reached the top 40 on the Billboard country music charts since his career began in 1977. You’re Gonna Ruin My Bad Reputation and Older Woman were two of those songs that peaked at the top of the charts. Eleven more of McDowell’s songs made it into the top 10.
He was also well-known for his song “The King Is Gone,” which became a country and crossover smash and was about the passing of Elvis Presley in 1977.
