Eagles rookie scores jaw-dropping 75-yard pick-six in NFL debut

Drew Mukuba, a safety for the Philadelphia Eagles, made a big impression on his NFL debut.

In the first half of Philadelphia’s preseason game against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field, Mukuba, a second-round rookie selected by the Eagles, recorded a pick-six.

In the second quarter, Mukuba raced away for a 75-yard house call after undercutting a crossing pattern and taking the toss from Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel the other way.

Given the circumstances surrounding his early career, it was a significant event for Mukuba.

Sydney Brown and the former Texas standout, selected with the 64th overall choice in the 2025 draft, are vying for Reed Blankenship’s starting safety spot. Brown had an advantage because Mukuba missed time early in training camp owing to an injury.

However, Mukuba was adored by Howie Roseman and the Eagles at the selection, and many believed he would have an opportunity to start as a rookie.

After the Eagles selected Mukuba, Roseman remarked, “It’s really hard to find cover safeties and guys who have the ability to come down and play over the slot, play in the middle of the field, have natural instincts, and play the ball.” Prior to moving to Texas, he was a slot corner at Clemson. He was born in Austin. He is skilled with the ball. He has a certain mindset, and this man plays football the way the Eagles do.

The value, in my opinion, immediately satisfied the necessity for us. Throughout the process, we had the impression that this man just fulfilled every need, which is exactly what we were hoping for in that role.

On Saturday, Mukuba undoubtedly fulfilled a requirement: he recorded his first NFL pick-six.
