Marcus Spears Jr., the son of former LSU football player and ESPN pundit Marcus Spears, has been named the nation’s top basketball recruit for his class.

With a grade of 94, Spears Jr. topped the list of the 60 basketball recruits ESPN announced for the class of 2027 on Thursday. Paul Osaruyi, C.J. Rosser, and Obinna Ekezie complete the top five, with Bruce Branch III at number two on the list.

A 6-8 power forward, Marcus Spears Jr. is a student at Dynamic Prep High School in Texas. This summer, he averaged 14 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game at the FIBA U16 AmeriCup in Juarez, Mexico.

Kentucky, USC, Arkansas, Louisville, Houston, Indiana, Tennessee, and a number of other prestigious collegiate basketball programs have extended offers to Spears Jr.

Marcus Spears Sr., who once covered college football for the SEC Network, now works as an NFL commentator for ESPN. When Spears was playing for the Tigers, he was an All-SEC and All-American performer.

After being selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft, he played in 119 games and racked up 10 sacks over his eight seasons in Dallas.

In 2013, Spears’ final NFL season, he made five appearances and recorded ten tackles with the Baltimore Ravens.

Marcus Spears Sr. was a standout football player and, upon graduating from high school, one of the nation’s best basketball players. During his final year, he averaged 23.7 points and 15 rebounds per game.
