Excessive heat causes bump to form on interstate in central Pa. city

Published On:

WILLIAMSPORT — The excessive heat has caused a 2- to 3-inch-high bump in both eastbound lanes of Interstate 180 in Williamsport.

Traffic is being maintained, but the

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation

has placed a variable message board advising motorists to slow down and be cautious.

The heat caused a joint in the underlying continuously reinforced concrete to expand, resulting in the asphalt overlay to heave, PennDOT says.

The location is between the Market Street bridge exit ramp and the Basin Street interchange.

Maintenance personnel are scheduled to make temporary repairs between 4 and 6 a.m. Wednesday, PennDOT said.

There will be rolling roadblocks while the work is being done, it says.

Permanent repairs are planned later this summer as part of a project that includes milling and repaving I-180 in both directions between the Loyalsock Creek bridge just west of Montoursville and the Route 15 interchange in Williamsport.

Milling of the westbound lanes is scheduled to begin this week, PennDOT says.
