Former San Jose State receiver Chandler Jones, who is one of the best receivers in school history, has died. He was 33 years old.
The San Jose State football Twitter account
revealed the news
earlier this week.
“Forever in our hearts, #89. In loving memory of Spartan wide receiver and coach, Chandler Jones,” the account posted.
In addition to setting school records as a receiver for the Spartans, Jones was also a graduate assistant for the San Jose State program from 2017-19.
According to
USA Today
, Chandler Jones died after “being hit in a highway accident.” The report states that Jones was hit by a “Toyota RAV4 near an off-ramp on California State Route 90 at about 2 a.m. Sunday morning.”
Jones played at San Jose State from 2010-13, ending his career with the most receptions in school history (248) and touchdown receptions in school history (31). He is also the only player in San Jose State history to finish his career with at least 50 receptions in all four seasons.
The Los Angeles native put up incredible numbers as a senior, finishing the 2013 season with 79 receptions for 1,356 yards and 15 touchdowns. He earned first-team All-Mountain West honors that year.
After his college football career, Jones spent a few seasons playing professional football. He had stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL and Montreal Alouettes of the CFL.
