A former Ohio State football All-American died over the weekend as
Ted Smith passed away
on Saturday, June 21. He was 71 years old.
Smith’s death was announced in an obituary. The Ohio native was living in Gibsonburg, Ohio at the time of his death.
Prior to playing for the Buckeyes, Ted Smith attended Gibsonburg High School. He played for Ohio State from 1972-75 as the Buckeyes won at least a share of four consecutive Big Ten titles under head coach Woody Hayes.
Smith started his college football career as a linebacker, before switching to offensive line and excelling.
He helped pave the way for Legendary Ohio State running back Archie Griffin as he won the Heisman Trophy in 1974 and 1975. Smith was a starting guard on both of those teams.
Smith earned Consensus All-American honors and first-team All-Big Ten honors in 1975, his last year of college football.
He went on to work in construction for many years, serving as a paving superintendent for Shelly County until he retired in 2007.
Smith’s obituary states that after he stopped playing college football he “was a die-hard Ohio State Buckeyes football fan, cheering passionately on game days and instilling that same love of the game in his family.”
