Green Card Holder Detained by ICE Says Food Not Fit for His Dog

According to a green card holder who is being held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Houston Detention Center’s conditions are cruel, and the food is so bad that he wouldn’t even feed it to his dog.

On June 17, Deon Lewis, who has resided in the United States since 1993, was placed under ICE detention. He has been convicted of several drug-related felonies, including possession of cocaine, possession of a handgun, and driving without a license, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

After finding it difficult to adjust to life at the ICE-run facility, Lewis, who has sickle cell disease and has had two lung surgeries because of pneumothorax, said he finally asked to be deported.

The Houston Detention Center has appalling conditions. from the food they give us to the medical care they provide. Lewis told Newsweek from detention, “My dog wouldn’t even eat this food.”

His claims have been refuted by DHS.

Lewis also reported bad air quality, maltreatment by certain guards, and black mold on the bathroom floors and in the showers. He said, “I think they do their best to keep us as uncomfortable as they can, but not all of them.” These facilities are not designed with people in mind. The circumstances are inhumane.

Roxanne Lewis, his wife, claimed that she has had restless nights worried about his well-being. She said he was routinely refused access to adequate medical care while being transferred between detention facilities in Baltimore, New Jersey, Boston, Louisiana, and Houston. She brought up a story of a nurse in Louisiana who supposedly laughed while he puked on the ground.

In keeping with his campaign promise of mass deportations, President Donald Trump has ordered his administration to remove millions of people who are in the United States illegally. Even foreign nationals with visas and green cards have been held in detention.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Lewis’ criminal history began in 2002 when he was caught for possessing cocaine, entered a guilty plea, and was placed on probation. In 2020, he was once more accused of carrying a handgun and possessing cocaine and marijuana.

In support of its decision, DHS emphasized Lewis’ criminal record and insisted that inmates receive the attention they need.

According to DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin, the fake news keeps up its 24-hour news cycle by spreading bogus sob stories for dangerous criminals like Deon Kevon Lewis, but refuses to cover Americans who have been raped, murdered, and molested by criminal illegal aliens.

Lewis, 43, was a convicted drug trafficker from Trinidad and Tobago, according to her. He had been convicted of several offenses, including cocaine trafficking, felon in possession of a handgun, and transporting a loaded pistol in a car.

“With intake screenings done within 12 hours of arrival, ICE guarantees detainees access to comprehensive medical, dental, and mental health services,” McLaughlin continued. DHS takes very seriously its mission to provide safe, secure, and humane settings for people in our custody.

However, Lewis claims that his experience has been discouraging and difficult. I’m still in custody and hoping to be sent back to my country of origin. I’m making amends for a crime I committed twenty-three years ago. For my wrongdoing, I paid my dues to society, and I don’t deserve this.

His wife underlined how his incarceration has affected their family. All of us are somewhat depressed. Deon’s absence has been really challenging. He is a devoted husband, father, son, and friend to many. They are misrepresenting him as a threat to public safety. He is always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.
