Honey flows in Newport hollow

Published On:

The family-run Honey in the Hollow Bee Farm is a purpose-driven apiary nestled on Gypsy Hollow Road, just outside of Newport. The farm, which is run by Glenn and Susan Scott, has expanded from a single hive that was presented in 2018 to a flourishing enterprise that now oversees almost 100 colonies throughout central Pennsylvania.

The gritty, sticky, and occasionally sting-prone task of beekeeping is handled by Glenn, a kind and hardworking beekeeper. After becoming a member of the Capital Area Beekeepers Association, where he was mentored and subsequently elevated to vice president, his love for the profession took off. In order to benefit from the earlier spring honey flow, the pair currently oversees hives at several locations in Perry and Juniata counties. They even ship bees to South Carolina every winter. To keep the bees productive, that logistical dance may involve revolving boxes, removing hundreds of pounds of honey, and nocturnal drives. They produced five tons of honey last year alone. They anticipate exceeding eight this year.

“There’s a lot of work involved,” Glenn added. But when you open a hive and discover a thick layer of brood from a healthy queen, it’s worth it. That indicates that you’re doing something correctly.
