Despite the high amount of money being offered, there is no assurance that the Pittsburgh Steelers will sign outside linebacker T.J. Watt anytime soon.
According to NFL source James Palmer of Bleacher Report, Watt may be able to earn more than the $40 million Myles Garrett received annually from the Cleveland Browns. Watt would sign a new, record-breaking contract if it occurred.
According to Palmer on NFL Insider Notebook, Watt may earn more than $40 million a season. He is perfectly entitled to request it. The similarities between him and Myles Garrett have been discussed extensively on this site. The statistics were from the same draft class and are nearly equal in terms of both numbers and superlatives. He has every right to attempt to obtain that, after all.
When it comes to the next agreement for Watt, the Pittsburgh Steelers have a high standard to meet given Garrett’s $40 million annual salary. Aidan Hutchinson of Detroit might surpass that figure, which would raise Watt’s yearly gross average and possibly guaranteed salary even further.
The 30-year-old edge rusher is still among the best in the NFL. General manager Omar Khan expressed the team’s desire for Watt to complete his career with the Steelers during last week’s annual league meetings.
“If you’re talking about T.J. [Watt], I’m not going to go into the contract numbers, but I’ll just say that I’m very hopeful that T.J. will finish his career as a Steeler,” Khan said.
He struggled with several ailments during the season and only recorded 11.5 sacks last year. Watt stated after the season that he wished to remain with the Steelers.
