At California Governor Gavin Newsom’s redistricting rally in Los Angeles on Thursday, U.S. Border Patrol officers displayed a great deal of force. Is it a coincidence, in your opinion? The governor informed the audience at the Japanese American National Museum that it was evident that Donald Trump and his crew, including tough guy Tom Homan, decided that this was a location to press ICE arrests, whether that was intentional or not.
It is concerning for the nation that an American president dispatched camouflaged operatives to a rival political event. For Republicans, however, it also plain looks stupid from a political standpoint. It does the exact reverse of what the Trump administration wants, which is to demonstrate that immigration forces are not political, and it benefits Newsom and the Democratic Party.
Americans expect the Border Patrol to perform its duties. However, they are supposed to guard our borders, not show up at anti-president protests.
It isn’t American. The majority of Americans don’t want to see it.
Trump is already having political difficulties, so such actions won’t help him. According to polls, the majority of Americans support the president’s immigration policies and believe that the United States should prevent illegal immigration. However, his support for the matter has diminished.
The way the policies are implemented is the issue, not the policies in se. Scenes like Thursday in Los Angeles, where police officers arrest people on the street while wearing masks, sunglasses, and no identification, appear brutal and un-American.
Opponents of the president have benefited politically from this strategy. Democrats may have a chance to win a Senate majority in the midterm elections because they are performing well on general ballots.
Democrats might even win states like Maine, which were carried by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in 2020 and 2024, under these circumstances. North Carolina, which Harris and Biden lost, might be competitive as well. There, well-liked Democratic Governor Roy Cooper has entered the Senate contest and is now ahead of the pack. Former Senator Sherrod Brown, a well-liked candidate who lost in 2024, might seek for the Senate seat in Ohio. Additionally, Democrats are considering states like Texas, Alaska, and Iowa.
All Americans should be concerned about Trump’s disturbing activities. However, Republicans should also be concerned since Trump’s immigration policies lead the party to lose support each time they are seen by the public. The majority of people find it uncomfortable, and it might hurt Republicans in the upcoming election.
