LATROBE, PA. –When the pads finally go on Tuesday, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlinis is looking forward to a particular game, albeit it may not be the one most people anticipate.
Running back Kenneth Gainwell and linebacker Payton Wilson will face off in the backs-on-backers coverage drills, which is the matchup Tomlin will be watching.
I prefer Kenny G [Gainwell] over Payton Wilson on routes, you know. Out of the backfield, Kenny G is shown a great deal of skill in route running. In his second year, Payton Wilson is a man who is trying to dominate his community. Tomlin stated, “It’s just one of those matchups that has my attention.”
The Steelers have occasionally split Gainwell into the slot as a wide receiver. He is receiving a lot of work in the first and second team groups as well as in practice environments.
Tomlin is also eager to see how DK Metcalf will match up with Jalen Ramsey and Darius Slay.
All of those guys should compete, in my opinion. Tomlin stated, “You know, everyone is going to get their chance at a guy like that.” Jalen [Ramsey] probably feels the same way. I have no doubt that [Darius] Slay shares my sentiments. DK probably feels the same way. That is the wonderful thing about a camp setting, where we practice good on good and apply the iron-on-iron approach to improve.
As they continue to prepare for their preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Steelers will have several more hard workouts throughout the week in addition to finally getting the pads popping on Tuesday.
