A woman claims that her fiancé is now involving his own mother since he is pressuring her so much to adopt his last name.
The 27-year-old, who requested anonymity, reveals in a Reddit post that a recent phone call concerning changing last names after marriage got out of hand when her fianc brought up his mother.
Emotions were running high when we had previously discussed this weeks prior, she says. That is why I was afraid to mention it to his mother. He persisted in questioning me about it, and I suppose I said something incorrectly since she became agitated.
She goes on: My fiancé stated that if I don’t adopt his last name, he won’t marry me, just like he used to do. At first, his mother remained composed and attempted to explain that it’s about respecting and honoring your husband, but she stated she would honor my choice. I informed her that I didn’t understand that and thought it was an old-fashioned practice. She was furious about that.
Her prospective mother-in-law allegedly began increasing her voice on the phone, which caused the situation to worsen.
The woman acknowledges that she is conflicted, saying, “I feel hurt by both of their actions, but I also feel guilty.” In the end, I concluded that since I love him so much, it is not worth upsetting him. I feel so horrible about it that I am unable to sleep at the moment. Additionally, I feel that by agreeing to change it, I’m not being true to myself.
She looked to Reddit for perspective and guidance, asking, “Am I missing something here?” Could someone who shares their opinions explain to me why this could be interpreted as disrespect?
One person commented, “Girl, forget the name,” among other comments. Your true issue is that this man uses threats of punishment to deal with disagreements. That is a warden, not a life partner.
