Penn State Defender of the Day update: Jim Knowles’ attention is on a second-year safety

Jim Knowles, the defensive coordinator at Penn State, has recently focused his Defender of the Day briefings on defensive linemen and cornerbacks.

However, Knowles is experimenting with his most recent update in his first season as head coach of the Nittany Lions defense.

Safety redshirt freshman The newest member of the Knowles DOTD Club is Antoine Belgrave-Shorter.

Last season, the 200-pound, 6-0 Belgrave-Shorter played special teams and defense in seven games. For his efforts on the practice squad before to the Lions’ victory at Wisconsin, he was named Penn State’s Developmental Squad Special Teams Player of the Week.

Belgrave-Shorter joins sophomore Dejuan Lane as the second safety singled out by Knowles during preseason training.

At the slot behind returning starter Zakee Wheatley, there is fierce competition. Safeties Kevin Winston Jr. and Jaylen Reed are being replaced by PSU.
