Idaho’s Boise Video footage of Bryan Kohberger, the man convicted of killing four University of Idaho students, in his jail cell has been posted online, according to the Idaho Department of Corrections.
In a press release, IDOC stated that it has not yet verified the authenticity of what seems to be video of Kohberger in his jail cell that has been making the rounds on social media. According to the department, if the films were confirmed, they would be a blatant breach of the agency’s regulations, and those involved would face consequences.
In July, Kohberger, who had been apprehended at his parents’ house in Pennsylvania, entered a guilty plea to the 2022 killings of the students at their off-campus rental. He received a life sentence in prison.
According to the release, jail administration has reminded staff members via two emails of the rules and guidelines on the use of social media and technology. According to IDOC, it is forbidden to record and distribute security footage. The organization promised to look into all available options, including filing criminal charges.
According to the agency’s message, “the safety and security of our staff and incarcerated population remains our top priority.”
Although the video’s origin is unknown, it has been extensively circulated online on Facebook groups and Reddit devoted to discussing Kohberger’s case, as well as in social media posts by podcasters and true-crime fans.
After receiving permission, correctional personnel are permitted to use cellphones inside the buildings, but they are not permitted to take pictures or videos.
In its latest release, IDOC warned that some videos might be phony or artificial intelligence (AI) boosted.
Local defense lawyer Edwina Elcox told the Idaho Statesman that even in high-profile cases, the potential release of the video is somewhat unusual.
According to Elcox, such a leak would constitute a significant breach and raise questions about the prison’s safety and security. She went on to say that staff members of the jail system are supposed to treat everyone with respect and decency rather than disparage the organization.
According to her, the public’s animosity and anger toward Kohberger has contributed to the case’s exceptionally high levels of interest.
Elcox informed the Statesman that in any other situation, he would be sealed away and the world would move on.
Hours after his sentencing, Kohberger, 30, was transferred to the Idaho Maximum Security Institution, which is located south of Boise.
