Graham Fenton, the frontman of British rockabilly bands like Matchbox and the Houseshakers, passed away. His age was 76.
According to Vintage Rock, Fenton passed away on August 10. There was no cause of death mentioned.
Fenton, who was born in 1949, began his career as the Houseshakers’ singer in the late 1960s. The trio opened for artists like Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley and supported Gene Vincent on his European tours.
Fenton joined Matchbox in 1976 after leaving the Houseshakers, which are now the Hellraisers. Fred Poke, Jimmy Redhead, Gordon Scott, and Steve Bloomfield were also in the ensemble.
Rockabilly Rebel by Matchbox peaked at number 18 on the UK Singles Chart in 1979. Midnite Dynamos and a rendition of The Crickets’ “When You Ask About Love,” which peaked at number four, are among the band’s other hits.
Graham Fenton’s Matchbox, which Fenton founded in 1989, put out six albums in the early 1990s. However, Matchbox’s original lineup got back together and went on a European tour in 1995.
Along with the Jungle Tigers, Fenton recorded many solo albums, including Fastest Cadillac in Town in 2017. He also began contributing a regular column to Vintage Rock in 2022, where he shared his career memories.
