Short-term closure of Perry County road planned for replacement project: PennDOT

Published On:

Today, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) declared that the Route 274 culvert rehabilitation project in Perry County will be temporarily closed.

In order for the contractor to install new box culvert sections, the structure—which crosses Montour Creek in Spring Township between Limestone Ridge Road and Mahanoy Ridge Road—will be closed for a few days in July. The structure cannot stay open due to the size of the crane being used for this task.

The bridge will close on Tuesday, July 8 and reopen sometime on Friday, July 11 in the afternoon, weather permitting. According to a press release, there will be a detour via Routes 74, 850, and 34.

When the bridge reopens, traffic will be controlled by temporary signals and just one lane will be open.

This work is a component of a three-bridge project in Perry County that includes repairs to the Route 34 bridge over the Juniata River in Newport Borough, as well as the replacement of box culverts on Routes 274 in Spring Township and 850 in Carroll Township.

Early this summer, construction will start on the Route 850 bridge, which crosses a tributary to Shermans Creek immediately west of Route 34. To facilitate two-way traffic around the work area, a temporary access road will be built first.

Later this summer, construction is anticipated to start on the Route 34 bridge that crosses the Juniata River at Newport. During the day, there will be lane restrictions due to flagging.

Releases will be made prior to the bridges’ construction.

For this $2.7 million project, Lobar Site Development Corporation of Dillsburg is the contractor. The goal is to have everything finished by December 2026.
