LATROBE, PA. –Despite three of the team’s five sessions being impacted by the rain, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has no intentions to alter practice schedules in the near future.
The Steelers had to postpone their first padded practice and do a walkthrough indoors on Tuesday due to lightning and rain that arrived at the worst possible moment, right before practice was supposed to begin.
I didn’t find what we were searching for today, but that’s just the way life is in football and elsewhere. You can always find the good in every situation at this point in the team’s development. We were able to practice our walkthrough format and the tasks we do in certain situations by taking it to the gym. Whether on an individual or group level, it’s nearly always a chance to improve, to become better at something, or to change. According to Tomlin, we completed some fruitful work at the gym after going over our screenplay.
The Steelers can eventually move into the indoor facility being built by Saint Vincent College, which will have a full turf football field. It won’t be prepared this year, though.
In an attempt to expose the players to more heat-related conditions, Tomlin rescheduled the practices from 10:30 a.m. to 1:55 p.m. There are currently no plans to alter that.
Not while I’m sitting here now. The acclimatization period is simply that when we reflect on it. It’s the time for acclimatization. We had to make adjustments and adaptations today since it was the first day of work, but Tomlin stated, “I’m not ready to make wholesale changes or even anticipate making wholesale changes.”
An hour later, when it was sunny, why not take practice outside again? Even on the turf field off to the side, Tomlin was concerned about the players’ safety since a downpour like that could make the surface slippery.
To tell the truth, I don’t want to begin that way. We will have plenty of time to grow in the ways that we require. While working hard is important to us, we also want to work smart. According to Tomlin, safety considerations are always taken into account when making decisions.
The majority of the scheduled events have been moved from Tuesday to Wednesday, and the Steelers will return tomorrow for what should be their first padded day.
