Superheroes surprise patients at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital in Hershey

Some of the patients’ favorite superheroes rappelled down the side of the Hershey hospital building on Tuesday morning, giving the patients at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital a huge surprise.

Penn State Health collaborates with Vancena Property Services, a window cleaning business in the Harrisburg region, to organize this unique event each year to make young patients’ days happier.

Three superheroes, Captain America, Spider-Man, and Superman, rappelled down the hospital’s side, stopping at each window to greet the patients. The event is in its ninth year.

Everyone is giddy with anticipation. Every year, several of our patients remember this incident. According to Ashley Kane, manager of the hospital’s Child Life department, “Our staff gets really excited at this time of year, too, because they know it just brings magic and joy to the kids.”

A large number of our employees also came up to support our children patients and their families.

The hospital’s closed-circuit television system allowed patients who are unable to leave their rooms to watch the superheroes rappel down the structure. Kids also receive a treat bag with unique gifts and a superhero theme.
