According to officials at New York State Park, a 20-year-old lady was probably attacked by a shark at Long Island’s Jones Beach last Wednesday.
The State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation stated in a statement on Friday that the woman reported park officials she was bitten by unidentified marine creatures while she was waist-deep in the ocean at 4:15 p.m. on the Central Mall beachfront.
The woman was transported to a hospital and treated after suffering minor cuts to her left leg and foot.
Swimming was stopped right away while staff members used a drone to look for any indications of potentially harmful marine creatures. Additionally, lifeguards patrolled the area with boats and watercraft and inspected the sea from shore. Swimming continued Thursday morning with no sightings.
According to officials, the victim was likely attacked by a young sand tiger shark. If this is true, the shark attack at a park in New York State is the first of the year.
In order to prevent any shark attacks, no matter how small, park officials in New York advise swimmers to:
-
Avoid areas with schools of fish, splashing fish, or any diving seabirds
-
Do not swim at dusk, night, or dawn
-
Avoid murky water
-
Swim, paddle, and surf in groups
-
Stay close to shore, and make sure your feet can touch the bottom
-
Listen to and follow the instructions of lifeguards and beach staff
